new york - alexander wang - spring/summer 2009

the last time a young designer received the adulation of downtown new york so unabashed was marc jacobs when he started designing for perry ellis. and we all know what a success story marc has become so maybe the same future is in store for alexander wang. who at just twenty four years of age is steadily building a reputation as one of the torch bearers of american fashion. the designer's inspiration has always been that of an urban sensibility. being a product of the new generation who grew up with the internet and information so freely available at their fingertips, wang is an example of a designer who sees the world as one market. wang clearly understands his customer and realizes that the young downtown girl from london will be just as receptive to his designs as the young downtown girl from new york. these are clothes that wasn't made for the high heeled uptown crowd more established new york designers caters to, these clothes are for the new generation of modern women whose sex appeal is found in their nonchalant confidence and awareness to the world at large. this season alexander wang injected a shot of colour to his usually sombre colour pallette of blacks and neutrals. there were splashes of sky blues, peachy oranges, fushia, and lilac. while these colours tend to conjure images of flirtatious femininity, it being alexander wang, the clothes were infused with a raw sexuality that he has never really explored before. there was a lot of exposed skin in this collection which is okay because the alexander wang girl knows the fine line of being sexy without looking like a cheap street walker. and if his customers want more wang in their life, then they'd better start saving their pennies because his debut shoe collection of open toe platform ankle boots decorated in chain links and fringe is a guaranteed best seller.
