i show a lot of love for girl models and not enough for the boys so i decided to profile one of my favorite male models of all time. actually, i think matthew is my favorite male model of all time. i'm a big fan of messy looking boys. add the fact that he skateboards, well he took every prize with that one.
it must be a form of divine coincidence that one of the most striking faces to ever come out of male modeling owes much of his heritage from one of the first to make models famous in the first place. the grand son of legendary photographer richard avedon, matthew was discovered while walking on the streets of his native new york by a photographer who it turned out, was a friend of his mothers and on his sixteenth birthday he was signed to next models. when he was first sent to milan to do the shows he skipped most of the castings and spend most of his time riding his skateboard exploring the city. the following season however, not only did he go to his castings, but the vogue for "real" and "natural" boys was becoming the hot trend in male modeling and matthew perfectly embodied that essence and his success and popularity soared. he possesed a natural beauty and masculinity without having a gym perfect body or a hyper machismo which was de rigeur in male modeling. his natural ease that invites viewers in instead of distancing them made him the face of not only fashion forward brands like versus, but for commercial power houses ralph lauren, the gap, and h&m. he still makes the odd runway appearance every now and then and he can still be seen regularly on men's fashion magazines. but i bet he probably spends his days riding his board and playing his music. he is basically perfect.
